CIH Fellow uses techniques from graphic novels to explain politics of wildfire management
Jamie Michaels and Jean-Frédéric Morin have published a peer-reviewed comic in Earth Systems Governance. In "Assets and Ashes: Wildfire Management and the Politics of Climate Change," the authors illustrate the wide-ranging impact of extractive industries in North America. The feedback loops that they describe have, to date, produced ever-increasing and intensifying wildfires. Still, the authors argue that this dynamic is not set in stone. Instead, they use forestry as an example of an industry that is changing its self-perceptions and political alignments, indicating that a new politics of climate change is imminent. Jamie is a writer, filmmaker, and educator who joined the Calgary Institute for the Humanities as a Graduate Student Fellow in 2024. During his Fellowship, Jamie will be working on his research-creation dissertation. This graphic novel traces the emergence of Jewish and Arab nationalisms during the First World War. By representing both Jewish and Arab perspectives, Jamie’s goal is to foster greater understanding between Israelis and Palestinians.
