Universities have a role in creating cross-cultural learning that facilitate awareness and understanding of Indigenous perspectives, histories, cultures and belief systems. A funding opportunity at the University of Calgary supports and acknowledges that there are countless ways this can be realized within a campus community.

Indigenous Curriculum Grants provide up to $10,000 to support initiatives that advance Indigenous perspectives and engagement within curriculums across faculties. Projects supported in the past include, but are not limited to: land-based learning, curriculum development within an academic program, engaging Indigenous Elders and Traditional Knowledge Keepers in teaching and learning, and pilot projects.

“Each year since this grant program launched in 2022, I have continued to marvel at how recipients continue to be from various faculties, departments, disciplines and propose initiatives that are unique and aligned with ii’ taa’poh’to’p, UCalgary’s Indigenous Strategy," says Dr. Michael Hart, PhD, vice-provost (Indigenous Engagement). “This is a chance for academic colleagues to receive financial support to move forward with innovative ideas, community partnerships, and impactful learning experiences to advance Indigenous ways of knowing, being, doing and connecting. “

UCalgary Indigenous Curriculum Grants provide meaningful opportunities for students and educators to connect with Indigenous peoples and communities, and experience local Indigenous knowledges, pedagogies and traditions.

“Affirming Indigenous knowledges and perspectives in post-secondary teaching and learning is critical to ensuring thoughtful engagement in Truth and Reconciliation across academic programs” says Dr. Natasha Kenny, PhD, executive director of the Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning. “The funds provided from these grants support important work that is currently emerging, and plants seeds for transformation across this university moving forward.”

Indigenous Curriculum Grants are led by the Office of Indigenous Engagement, with support from the Vice-Provost (Teaching and Learning) and the Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning.

Submissions are now open for the 2026 grant cycle. Applications will be accepted up until Jan. 30, 2026. Learn more about the application process and complete grant details and criteria.

ii’ taa’poh’to’p, the University of Calgary’s Indigenous Strategy, is a commitment to deep evolutionary transformation by reimagining ways of knowing, doing, connecting and being. Walking parallel paths together, "in a good way," UCalgary is moving toward genuine reconciliation and Indigenization.

The Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning is dedicated to better understanding and improving student learning. Both a building and a community, it brings undergraduate inquiry, teaching and learning development, and research under one roof. Learn more here
