Sharkey to be inducted as CAG Fellow

Keith Sharkey, PhD, has been named a Canadian Association of Gastroenterology Fellow (CAGF), in recognition of his service to the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology (CAG) and to Canadian gastroenterology.

The newly created professional designation honours long-time service to the association as well as a commitment to the high standards of professionalism that it espouses.

Dr. Sharkey, a professor in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, and the Department of Medicine, studies the nervous system of the gastrointestinal tract in health and disease. His laboratory's major focus is the role of nerves in intestinal inflammation. The research is applicable to Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. His additional research interests include the intrinsic primary afferent neurons and enteroendocrine cells in inflammatory bowel disease, the role of cannabinoids in the control of emesis, and the neurobiology of obesity.

Dr. Sharkey, along with 11 other awardees, will be formally recognized with their CAGF designation on February 8, 2014 during Canadian Digestive Diseases Week in Toronto.
