The PhD is a research-intensive degree to prepare you for a career in research and teaching. Our PhD prepares you for leadership in research, teaching, social policy development, and more.

Completing the PhD does not qualify you to register with the ACSW unless you hold a BSW or MSW.

Schedule and Location

This program is offered full-time on campus only.

The PhD will be delivered from Calgary for students entering in fall 2027.

You'll complete 27 units including 12 units of elective courses relevant to your area of specialization and research focus.

Milestones

Expected completion time is 4 years.

Candidacy: You'll complete both oral and written candidacy exams.

Dissertation: You'll conduct original research and prepare a written dissertation that is evaluated and orally defended before an examination committee.

You'll be assigned a supervisor at admission.

Researching our faculty members and their areas of research is beneficial before applying.

I came back to do my PhD to continue my studies because I realized that there are these barriers where I could not fully assist the immigrant women or the marginalized communities... I joined the PhD program because I find that I have my voice in academic spaces. This is where I belong. And I can make stronger changes in policy and higher levels.
