Conclusion of International Practicum Module

Conclusions

The international practicum allows social work students to address global social challenges in an international setting and prepare students for local and international social work practice. This module discussed the context of international practicum in a globalized world and highlighted the benefits, challenges and ethical dilemmas associated with an international field placement experience.

Preparing for an international practicum is essential to creating a successful and meaningful experience by ensuring awareness of potential ethical and logistical challenges prior to arrival at the field education destination while aiming to decrease adjustment time and increase capacity to troubleshoot any issues that arise. Moreover, preparing for an international practicum is crucial to create a successful and meaningful experience for students and field agency partners. It is important for social work educators to prepare students in advance through coursework, preparatory seminars, and pre-departure planning.

This module provided practical guidelines on how to prepare for international field placement as well as return from practicum that could be helpful when navigating the unique challenges associated with an international field education experience. Ultimately, this training module is an important resource for students as they plan for international practicum, providing a step-by-step guide surrounding the preparation necessities for a rewarding international field experience as there will continue to be a need for international practicum opportunities for students to gain international experience and skills to address global challenges.
