I chose the University of Calgary because they have a very good reputation…As a mom, [the blended format] gives me a lot of freedom.

The Blended BSW Commitment

Schedule

The Blended BSW is a 20-month, full-time program. On average, you should plan to dedicate at least 30–35 hours per week to your studies.

You'll begin your studies in the Fall semester and take courses year-round, including the Spring and/or Summer semesters.

On campus learning

On-campus classes run one full day per week in three-hour blocks.

Blended programs are offered on the UCalgary main campus, Edmonton at the University of Alberta downtown campus, and Lethbridge at the University of Lethbridge main campus.

Online learning

Online classes follow a similar format to on-campus courses with daytime and evening options.

Social work option courses are delivered online and vary in format: some run in live (synchronous), 5-day intensive blocks, while others are held as live evening classes (Mon. to Thu.) or on Sat. mornings.

Technical requirements

Online Social Work courses are a mix of synchronous class time and asynchronous learning (reading, watching, and preparing material in your own time) using a variety of tools.

There are technology requirements and recommendations for online learning, including internet connectivity.

Program requirements in brief

For those admitted to the BSW without prior formal social work education, SOWK 201 is a program requirement. We recommend completing it before or during the application cycle.

Core courses in the BSW program cover topics such as theory and practice in an interconnected world; research; mental health; Indigenous peoples' histories, cultures, & healing practices; green and sustainable social work; and africentric social work practice.

Field education remains at the heart of social work education, and your practicum will typically be completed in-person.

  • Starting in your first semester, you'll complete 300-hour of learning through community service and social justice initiatives.
  • You'll also complete a 400-hour practicum in the winter term of your final year often scheduled weekdays during business hours, 4 full days/week.
  • Our field education team is dedicated to supporting you through your practicum journey.
  • Learn more about Field Education in the BSW.

Through social work option courses, you may study topics such as:

  • addictions and recovery, human sexuality, gerontology, intimate partner violence, loss and grief, mental health and trauma, social work in health care or child welfare settings, and social work with immigrants and refugees.

You still have teachers and strong connections with classmates… but we don't do it every day, so we're able to branch out and do other things while learning.

Small-school feeling. Big-university degree.

Social work classes are typically under 40 students, even online.

No matter which BSW program you choose, you can get to know your peers and instructors in intimate classes.

(Non-social work class sizes may vary.)

The blended program has been really good for having other life mix in — in class one day a week in person, one day online. It’s more flexible and allows a better lifestyle.
