Leadership in the Human Services: Applicants with a BSW Degree

Students are admitted annually to the program. This MSW is offered mostly online with four in-person residencies at our Calgary campus.

Leadership in the Human Services focuses on current theories and practices in leadership within a variety of organizational contexts. Throughout this program, you will learn about program planning, implementation and evaluation; policy analysis and development; organizational dynamics and change; supervision; community capacity building; social action and advocacy.

In the Leadership in Human Services specialization, you will gain the practical skills, leadership knowledge, and theoretical grounding to be an effective social work leader in human service, government and other community based organizational contexts. This specialization is only available with residencies at our Calgary Campus.

All students applying for the Master of Social Work (MSW) program have the option of completing either a course-based or thesis-based degree.

The minimum admission requirements for the Master of Social Work (course-based) include:   a) A four-year bachelor degree from an accredited/recognized institution with a minimum grade point average of 3.00 on a four-point scale.   IMPORTANT: The degree must be awarded prior to the start of the program. We cannot accept a letter of completion as a replacement for degree award.   b) The equivalent of two years of full-time paid work or a minimum of 3000 hours of paid and/or volunteer work in the human services field.   c) A program proposal outlining your educational goals and career expectations. The proposal must indicate your intended area of specialization.   d) One set of official transcripts from all previously attended post-secondary institutions (excluding the University of Calgary).   e) Two references, one academic and one professional.   f) English Language Proficiency   The capacity of our MSW program is limited. Not all qualified applicants will be admitted – even if they meet minimum admission requirements.   For information about application deadlines and procedures, visit our Apply Now page.   Note: Offers of admission are valid only for the term to which you apply. The Faculty of Social Work will not grant deferrals of admission. If you are unable to take up an offer, you will need to submit a new application for consideration at a later date.
Annual Registration: You must register to the program at the start of the graduate program through the Student Centre accessible through my.ucalgary.ca. Registration must be renewed annually (in May).   Students accepted into the MSW program choose full-time status.   Course enrolment:  It is your responsibility to verify course registration and enroll in the appropriate course(s) for each term.

Please note we do not grant any Advanced Credit for the MSW program.
