Giant Steps
In year three of implementing our 2022-27 Strategic Plan: A Place to Gather, the faculty made significant strides in it's goal to become a local and global leader in social work education, research. 2024–25 brought remarkable growth in research, teaching, community partnerships and progress on our parallel path toward decolonization - all driven by our shared commitment to creating a more just, compassionate and equitable world.

A Year of Growth
2023-24 marked the second chapter of implementing our Strategic Plan, A Place to Gather, and a powerful reminder that social work is – at its core – transdisciplinary by nature. Across our campuses and communities, faculty, students and partners came together to advance research and practice that cross boundaries, centre community needs, and spark collaborative solutions. From the momentum of our annual research symposium to the launch of the Reciprocity Project, 2023-24 showcased a Faculty moving confidently into shared spaces of innovation and impact. These highlights offer a snapshot of that progress and the many ways we are working with communities to create change that is truly ahead of tomorrow.

First Steps in the Journey
Our first year of A Place to Gather set the foundation for a five-year journey grounded in community, innovation and shared purpose. As the Faculty aligned with the University of Calgary’s Ahead of Tomorrow strategy, we reimagined our programs to expand access to future-focused social work education while strengthening the reciprocal research partnerships that address society’s most urgent challenges. This inaugural set of highlights captures the early steps of that transformation – from renewed curriculum and expanded learning pathways to research and community engagement that place people at the centre. It reflects a Faculty building the tipi together, creating a space where community, knowledge and social work leadership can thrive.

Strategic Plan 2022 - 27
In 2021, during the global pandemic, our faculty took on the hopeful task of collaboratively creating a bold new strategic plan. Amid incredible uncertainty and prevailing gloom, we took strength in creating a collective vision that drew on the input and inspiration of students, faculty, staff, field education partners, Elders, members of the professional social work community and many other stakeholders from across Alberta.
