The Elizabeth Fry Society of Calgary's youth mentorship program is a great way for those in the social work field to gain valuable volunteer experience by taking on a youth mentorship role for one-on-one engagement. They have many Indigenous youth in this program with complex needs who would benefit from an extra level of support and guidance from someone outside of their family dynamic. Some of these youth may already be in the justice system (or at risk of ending up in the justice system), so this program is geared towards finding them the kind of support that can steer them on to a more positive path, at a critical time in their lives.
It is fairly self-directed, so the volunteer hours can be tailored to fit a student's schedule.

Budget Resources for SSHRC Grants
When preparing your SSHRC budget, it is important to follow the Tri-Agency Guide on Financial Administration, which outlines what constitutes eligible expenses. SSHRC’s eligibility rules apply to all project costs, whether covered by SSHRC funds or by cash and in-kind contributions. While ineligible contributions may still be highlighted in your application as valuable support, they cannot be included in the formal budget.
To assist you, we have compiled guidance on the main SSHRC budget categories:
- Personnel costs
- Travel and subsistence costs
- Other expenses
Additional information is also available on how to appropriately value in-kind contributions.
